Perched on the Mendocino Coast of Northern California, Little River Inn Golf Course is one of the most scenically dramatic short layouts in the American West. The 9-hole course — played twice for 18 holes — sits on the inn's historic grounds, where rolling meadows give way to the kind of coastal headlands that make this stretch of Highway 1 legendary. Redwoods and Monterey cypress frame the fairways, the Pacific Ocean glitters in the distance, and fog rolls through on its own schedule, changing the character of the round hole by hole.
The course plays as a genuine challenge despite its compact yardage — the terrain is far from flat, and the coastal wind has a way of making every club selection feel like a negotiation. This is not a layout that asks for power; it asks for imagination and patience, rewarding players who learn to work the ball along undulating ground.
Little River itself is a blink-and-miss-it community just south of Mendocino town, surrounded by state parks, rugged coves, and some of the most unspoiled coastline in California. Playing here feels less like a round of golf and more like a reason to slow down and look around.
