Few courses carry a name that doubles as a design pedigree. The Original/Crenshaw course at Austin Country Club is the work of Ben Crenshaw and his longtime design partner Bill Coore, a layout that replaced the club's older Donald Ross-era track when the club relocated in the 1980s. Crenshaw, a University of Texas icon and 2-time Masters champion, brought his deep reverence for classical golf architecture to his home city, and the result is a course widely admired for its naturalistic routing through the Hill Country terrain above Lake Austin.
Coore & Crenshaw's trademark is restraint — minimal earthmoving, greens that reward ground game, and a rhythm that feels discovered rather than engineered. This course is considered one of the better examples of their philosophy, with dramatic elevation changes, native grasses, and putting surfaces that demand creativity over brute force.
Austin itself has become one of America's more serious golf cities, and Austin Country Club sits comfortably at the top of that local hierarchy — a private members' club where the design happens to be a genuine piece of the game's architectural conversation.
