Few courses in England occupy a setting quite like this one. Perched on the cliffs above St. Austell Bay on the south Cornish coast, Carlyon Bay delivers the kind of panoramic sea views that make it genuinely difficult to keep your eyes on the ball. The course opened in 1926 and was laid out along the headland adjoining the hotel of the same name, making it one of those rare properties where a seaside resort and a serious test of golf genuinely coexist. The exposed clifftop terrain means wind is a constant, invisible factor that transforms the playing experience from one round to the next.
St. Austell itself sits at the heart of Cornwall — kaolin country, where the white pyramids of old china clay spoil tips dot the inland landscape — but the golf course turns its back on all that and faces the sea instead. The combination of maritime turf, coastal breezes, and sheer scenic drama puts it firmly in the category of courses people travel specifically to play.
As a hotel course it welcomes visiting golfers readily, which has made it a well-worn stop on the Cornish golf trail. The layout rewards course management over brute force, and the par 71 plays shorter than the card suggests when the wind drops — and considerably longer when it doesn't.
