Penn Valley sits in the Sierra Nevada foothills of Nevada County, roughly an hour northeast of Sacramento and just below the snow line — gold rush country, where the terrain rolls with oak-studded ridges, seasonal streams, and the kind of dry summer air that sends the ball flying a touch farther than you'd expect. Lake Wildwood itself is a private planned community built around a reservoir, a model that became popular across California in the 1970s and gave rise to a particular breed of residential golf course where the layout weaves through home sites and the membership skews toward retirees and second-home owners.
That community-course character shapes the experience here. The golf tends to be unhurried and sociable, the kind of place where regulars have strong opinions about which holes play differently in the afternoon wind off the lake and where weekend tee sheets fill with foursomes who've been playing together for years.
Nevada County's foothill golf scene is modest in size but genuinely pleasant in setting — far enough from the valley heat to stay comfortable into late summer, and surrounded by the sort of ponderosa-and-manzanita landscape that gives Northern California its particular rustic quality.
