Few Scottish golf clubs carry a backstory quite like Buchanan Castle's. The course sits in the grounds of the ruined Buchanan Castle estate in Stirlingshire, north of Glasgow, and the history embedded in this landscape runs deep — the castle itself famously served as a military hospital during the Second World War, and Rudolf Hess was held here briefly after his dramatic flight to Scotland in 1941. Playing golf against that backdrop gives the round an atmosphere no scorecard entry could capture.
The setting in the Trossachs fringe means the course moves through mature woodland with the Highlands beginning to assert themselves on the horizon.
