Few courses in Colorado occupy terrain quite like this one. Bear Dance sits in Larkspur — a small community tucked between Castle Rock and Colorado Springs along the I-25 corridor — where the Front Range foothills give way to the kind of open, pine-studded high country that makes Colorado golf feel genuinely distinct from anywhere else in the game. The elevation here pushes the ball noticeably farther than sea-level golfers expect, and the views toward Pikes Peak and the surrounding ridgelines are a constant companion.
Bear Dance is a public course with a reputation that punches well above its zip code. Designed by Jim Engh, one of the most creative and unconventional architects working in American golf, it opened in 2002 and quickly earned national attention — Golf Digest and other outlets placed it among the best public courses in Colorado not long after opening. Engh's fingerprints are unmistakable: bold contouring, dramatic bunkering, and greens that reward imagination as much as precision.
The layout moves through ponderosa pine forest and open meadows, with elevation changes that demand both strategy and course management. This is mountain golf with genuine teeth — visually spectacular, mechanically demanding, and worth the detour off the interstate for any serious golfer passing through the Front Range.
