Herbertville Golf Course

Herbertville sits on the remote Hawke's Bay coastline — the administrative boundary places it in Manawatū-Whanganui, but geographically it occupies that wild stretch of coast where the Hawke's Bay foothills tumble toward the Pacific. It is about as far from manicured resort golf as you can get in New Zealand, and that is entirely the point.

This is a classic New Zealand rural club, the kind maintained largely by the local farming community and weekend members who make the drive out from Dannevirke or Woodville. Coastal wind is the permanent fifth player here, rolling off the Pacific with little to stop it across open farmland terrain. The course plays firm and fast on its natural ground, rewarding bump-and-run creativity over aerial heroics. Bring a bump-and-run game and realistic expectations about the presentation — the character more than compensates.

The Hawke's Bay and Manawatū border country is sheep and cattle territory, honest and unshowy. Golf here is the same — a genuine slice of rural New Zealand club life that has largely escaped modernisation.
