Mountain Ridge Country Club carries one of the more storied reputations in New Jersey golf. The club was founded in the early 20th century and its course was designed by A.W. Tillinghast, the same architect responsible for Winged Foot, Baltusrol, and Bethpage Black — which alone tells you something about the pedigree in play here. The layout has hosted significant amateur and club-level competition over the decades and remains a benchmark among northern New Jersey's private clubs.
West Caldwell sits in Essex County, in the rolling hills of the Watchung region about 20 miles west of Manhattan. That terrain gives Tillinghast what he loved to work with: natural elevation changes, mature hardwoods, and corridors that frame shots without feeling manufactured. Fall golf here, when the foliage turns, is genuinely spectacular.
As a private members' club, Mountain Ridge rewards those who learn its subtleties over time. The par-71 layout is not a number to dismiss — Tillinghast courses tend to play every bit as demanding as their ratings suggest, with greens complexes that punish the imprecise approach far more than raw length ever could.
