Few corners of Quebec feel as genuinely removed from city life as the Gatineau Hills, and Messines sits squarely in that tradition — a small municipality in the MRC de La Vallée-de-la-Gatineau, about an hour north of Ottawa and Gatineau along the winding Highway 105. The landscape here is classic Canadian Shield: rolling, forested terrain marked by outcroppings of rock, mixed boreal forest, and the kind of lakes and rivers that have drawn cottagers and outdoor families to this corridor for generations. Golf in this region tends to feel more rugged and unhurried than anything you'd find closer to the capital.
The name Algonquin honors the Indigenous peoples whose territory this has been for thousands of years, and it signals the wild, lake-country character of the surroundings. An 18-hole, par-72 layout in this terrain almost certainly works with natural elevation changes and mature tree cover rather than against them, rewarding players who manage the land rather than overpower it.
This is the kind of course you'd find on a long weekend escape — a round where the drive up is half the experience, the pace is relaxed, and the scenery does a great deal of the heavy lifting.
