Few golf destinations in the continental United States feel quite as remote or as cinematically dramatic as Lajitas, a tiny outpost in the Big Bend region of far west Texas. Black Jack's Crossing sits along the Rio Grande, with the Chisos Mountains and the raw, sun-bleached terrain of the Chihuahuan Desert forming a backdrop that stops first-time visitors mid-swing. The course takes its name from the legend of Black Jack Ketchum, the outlaw who roamed this borderland in the late 1800s — a nod to a past that feels entirely plausible when you're this deep in the Trans-Pecos.
Playing here is as much a geographical experience as a golf one. The desert landscape is unforgiving in the best sense: sotol, ocotillo, and native scrub define the rough, and the Rio Grande itself comes into play on several holes, with Mexico visible across the water. Wind off the river and the sheer openness of the terrain add strategic variables no scorecard can capture.
