Moorcroft sits in the high plains of northeastern Wyoming, where Crook County's wide-open ranchland meets the edge of the Black Hills. This corner of the state is not a place you'd typically associate with an 18-hole country club, which makes Key Hole's existence genuinely surprising — a full-length course in a town of roughly 1,000 people, sustained by the loyalty of a rural community that takes its golf seriously.
The course takes its name from Keyhole State Park and Keyhole Reservoir, just a few miles to the north, where the Belle Fourche River was dammed in the 1950s to create one of Wyoming's most popular recreation areas. That landscape — high desert grassland, sage, dramatic sky — almost certainly shapes how the course looks and plays, with natural terrain doing much of the design work and the wind a constant factor in club selection and course management.
At par 70, the layout leans shorter and more strategic than a traditional par-72 test. For anyone passing through on I-90 or exploring the Black Hills region, Key Hole offers something genuinely uncommon: a round of golf at the quiet edge of Wyoming's wide country.
