Angels Camp sits in the heart of California's Gold Country, a stretch of the Sierra Nevada foothills where the 1849 rush left behind more than ghost towns and mine shafts — it left a landscape of rolling oak woodlands, exposed granite, and the kind of rugged, sun-baked terrain that makes for compelling golf. Greenhorn Creek takes its name from the local creek drainage and the old mining slang for a novice prospector, a fitting nod to the region's history.
The course plays through the characteristic topography of Calaveras County — elevation changes, mature oaks framing fairways, and the dry California summer that turns the rough golden by July. This is foothill golf, which tends to mean uneven lies, elevated tee shots, and panoramic views across ridgelines when the air is clear.
Angels Camp is a small, self-possessed Sierra foothills town — famous in American literature as the setting of Mark Twain's "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County" — and Greenhorn Creek serves as the area's destination golf option, drawing visitors making their way through the Gold Rush corridor between Sacramento and Yosemite.
