信楽カントリー倶楽部 is a private members' club set in the cedar-covered hills of Shigaraki, the ancient pottery town in the Kōka district of Shiga Prefecture. Shigaraki sits on a highland plateau roughly 400 meters above the Lake Biwa basin, giving the course a noticeably cooler, crisper atmosphere than the Osaka and Kyoto lowlands nearby — winters bring real cold and occasional snow, and the woodland character shifts with every season. The Sugiyama Course (杉山コース) takes its name from the dense sugi — Japanese cedar — that lines its fairways and frames nearly every hole, creating the quiet, enclosed feeling that defines mountain club golf in the Kinki region.

The course rewards patience and course management over power. Tight, tree-framed corridors demand accuracy off the tee, and the sloping Shiga terrain introduces sidehill and uneven lies that test ball-striking consistency throughout the round.
