Few courses in Victoria announce themselves quite like Growling Frog. Located in Woodstock, a small township northeast of Melbourne in the Yea River corridor, the course is a genuine public-access facility that punches well above its weight for everyday golfers in the region. Designed by Bob Shearer — the former European Tour winner turned course architect — it opened in the early 2000s and quickly built a reputation as one of the better-value destinations within striking distance of the city.
The layout makes smart use of the undulating rural terrain north of the Yarra Valley, with native Australian grasses, eucalyptus stands, and wetlands shaping the character of the round. Water comes into play on several holes, and the design rewards players who manage their way around thoughtfully rather than swinging for broke.
The name alone tends to stick in golfers' minds, and the course has earned genuine affection among Melbourne-area players looking to escape the suburbs without sacrificing quality. It sits within comfortable reach of the Yarra Valley wine region, making it an easy sell for a full day out.
