Few courses in northern Michigan announce themselves quite like Dunmaglas. Designed by Larry Mancour and opened in 1991, it occupies a dramatically rolling glacial landscape on the bluffs above Lake Charlevoix, and the elevation changes are unlike almost anything else in the Midwest — some holes drop or climb as many as 200 feet. The course takes its name from a Scottish clan battle, and that Highland spirit carries through in the rugged, windswept feel of the layout. It has earned consistent recognition on Michigan's best-courses lists and is widely regarded as one of the finest public-access tracks in the northern Lower Peninsula.
Charlevoix itself is one of the most charming resort towns in the Great Lakes region, sitting between Lake Michigan and Lake Charlevoix with a short summer season that draws visitors from across the Midwest. The broader area — sometimes called the "Golf Coast" — is dense with serious courses, putting Dunmaglas in genuinely strong company.
The experience here rewards strategic thinkers. Mancour routed the holes to use the terrain rather than fight it, so blind shots and dramatic downhill approaches are part of the deal. Bring patience on your first round, and expect the views to distract you at the worst possible moments.
