Few golf regions in the American Midwest carry the weight that Gaylord does. The northern Michigan town sits at the heart of what's long been called the "Golf Mecca of the Midwest," a concentration of serious, architect-driven courses that draws players from across the Great Lakes states every summer. Black Forest at Wilderness Valley belongs firmly to that tradition — a Tom Doak design that has earned its reputation as one of the more demanding and thoughtful layouts in a region full of strong candidates.
Doak routed the course through dense northern Michigan woodland, and the name delivers on its promise. Tall pines crowd fairways throughout, placing a premium on accuracy off the tee and creating a cathedral-like atmosphere that feels removed from the rest of the world. The terrain rolls with genuine purpose, and the greens reward players who understand the course rather than simply overpower it.
Wilderness Valley itself operates as a resort property, which means the experience extends beyond the round — but Black Forest is the reason serious golfers make the trip north.
