Few resort courses in Australia carry as much baggage — in the best possible sense — as this one. Designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. and opened in 1994 as the centrepiece of the Hyatt Regency Coolum, the course made its international mark almost immediately by hosting the Australian PGA Championship multiple times through the late 1990s and 2000s, drawing the world's best players to Queensland's Sunshine Coast. The tournament history alone gives the layout a pedigree that most resort tracks can only dream about.
The setting does a great deal of the work. Coolum sits on a stretch of coast where the Sunshine Coast hinterland — volcanic peaks, native eucalypt scrub, and the looming silhouette of Mount Coolum itself — frames the playing corridors in a way that feels genuinely dramatic rather than manufactured. The course weaves through that natural topography, demanding accurate driving and rewarding players who shape the ball.
The resort rebranded under Arnold Palmer's name in more recent years following a change in management, and the course continues to draw visitors making the trip up from Brisbane or across from the nearby Noosa region. For touring golfers, this part of Queensland offers warm, dry winters and a relaxed pace that suits a few unhurried rounds.
