Few golf clubs on the African continent carry as much history as Royal Nairobi. Founded in 1906, it is one of the oldest golf clubs in East Africa, and the "Royal" prefix — granted by royal charter — signals its place at the top of Kenya's golfing hierarchy. The club has long been a fixture of Nairobi's social and sporting fabric, and its course has been shaped over the decades to suit serious competitive play. It has hosted numerous national and regional championships, cementing its reputation as Kenya's most prestigious layout.
The course sits at roughly 5,500 feet above sea level, and altitude changes everything here — balls fly noticeably farther than at sea level, and the air carries a cool, highland freshness that makes Nairobi golf a genuinely distinctive experience. The surrounding landscape is lush and green, fed by the city's equatorial rains, with mature trees framing fairways that demand thoughtful positioning off the tee.
As a private members' club, Royal Nairobi has a formal, traditional character. Visitors are welcomed but will find an atmosphere that takes the game seriously — unhurried, well-maintained, and steeped in a club culture that stretches back more than a century.
