Manitouwadge sits about as far north as golf gets in Ontario — a remote mining and forestry town deep in the boreal forest, roughly halfway between Thunder Bay and White River along the Trans-Canada corridor. The surrounding landscape is all Canadian Shield bedrock, spruce and pine, cold clear lakes, and short summers that compress an entire golf season into a few intense months. Playing here feels genuinely remote in a way that most courses can never replicate, no matter how scenic their marketing.
The club almost certainly grew out of the community infrastructure that mining companies built when Manitouwadge was developed in the 1950s as a purpose-built town around copper and zinc deposits. Courses like this one were often a cornerstone of that kind of planned resource community — a recreational anchor for workers and families in an otherwise isolated setting. That heritage gives the place a lived-in, unpretentious character that resort layouts rarely achieve.
Expect a full 18-hole layout shaped around the natural contours of the Shield, where the terrain does most of the architectural work. Golfers who make the trip tend to come for the quiet, the clean air, and the novelty of serious golf at the edge of the wilderness.
