Few resort courses carry the competitive weight that PGA National's Champion Course does. Home to the Honda Classic for decades, this is where world-ranked players have battled under the Florida sun in front of massive galleries — and where the Bear Trap, the brutal 3-hole stretch of 15, 16, and 17, has ended more tournament charges than most players care to remember. Designed originally by Tom and George Fazio and later reworked by Jack Nicklaus, the Champion Course is one of the most recognizable tournament venues in American resort golf.
Palm Beach Gardens itself was essentially built around PGA National when the PGA of America relocated its headquarters here in the 1960s, giving the whole complex an institutional gravitas unusual for a resort setting. The surrounding flatlands are classic South Florida — water everywhere, Bermuda turf baked hard in the heat, afternoon thunderstorms that can roll in without much warning.
Staying and playing here puts you on the same turf as Tour professionals, facing the same risk-reward decisions around the same water-guarded greens. The Bear Trap alone makes it worth the trip.
