Sweden's whisky country doubles as golf country here — Mackmyra Golf sits just outside Gävle in the Valbo area, sharing its name and landscape with the Mackmyra distillery, the pioneering Swedish whisky producer that helped put this corner of Gästrikland on the map. The course occupies terrain characteristic of central Sweden's forested interior: pine, birch, and spruce press in close, the fairways carved through woodland that shifts color dramatically with the seasons, and the light in summer stretches well into the evening, offering rounds that feel unhurried and almost surreal in their long northern dusk.
Gävle itself is one of Sweden's older coastal cities, and the surrounding region has a quiet, self-sufficient character that carries over to its golf. This is not a resort showcase or a tournament venue chasing prestige — it is a Swedish members' course where the game fits naturally into the local rhythm of life, and where the forest setting creates a genuine sense of enclosure and calm.
Rounds here tend to reward accuracy over power. The woodland layout punishes wayward drives and demands course management, while the unhurried pace and scenic surroundings make it the kind of place where the walk matters as much as the score.
