Ken McDonald Golf Course has been a fixture of Tempe's public golf landscape for decades, operated by the city and serving as a workhorse layout for residents of the East Valley. It sits along the Rio Salado corridor, and the mature trees lining its fairways — unusual by Sonoran Desert standards — give it a shaded, almost park-like character that sets it apart from the sun-baked desert courses the Phoenix metro is best known for. It's the kind of course where regulars show up on Tuesday mornings and know each other by name.
The surrounding area gives Ken McDonald its context: Tempe is a dense, walkable college town anchored by Arizona State University, and the course reflects that energy — accessible, unpretentious, and well-used. Desert Mountain it is not, but that's entirely the point.
For visiting golfers, it offers an honest look at how a Sun Belt city actually plays golf day to day — affordable, approachable, and a genuine alternative to the resort corridor up the road in Scottsdale.
