Jack Nicklaus designed Potomac Shores Golf Club, and it stands as one of the more ambitious golf developments in the modern mid-Atlantic region. Built as the centerpiece of a master-planned community along the Potomac River in Prince William County, the course opened in 2018 and quickly earned attention as a genuine destination layout — not merely an amenity tucked behind a subdivision gate. Nicklaus's routing takes advantage of the dramatic terrain, with elevation changes and river views that feel genuinely earned rather than engineered for a brochure.
The site sits roughly 30 miles south of Washington, D.C., which gives it a distinct character: close enough to draw a serious metropolitan golf audience, far enough that the land retains a wilder, more rural feel along the bluffs above the Potomac. The Virginia Piedmont landscape — hardwoods, rolling topography, the river corridor — gives the course a sense of place that many modern designs struggle to achieve.
For Nicklaus design fans, this is a relatively recent example of his work in a region not typically known for marquee course architecture, and it rewards players who pay attention to strategy off the tee.
