Golfclub Zeewolde

Golfclub Zeewolde sits on some of the most geologically young land in the world — the Flevopolder, reclaimed from the IJsselmeer in the 1960s and formally declared a province (Flevoland) in 1986. The course was designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. and opened in 1987, making it one of the earliest prestigious layouts to be built on Dutch polder land. RTJ Jr. worked with a blank canvas of almost perfectly flat terrain, responding with a design that leans heavily on water, strategic bunkering, and tree-lined corridors to create definition and challenge where nature provides little elevation change. The result is widely considered one of the finest courses in the Netherlands.

Because polder land was once lakebed, the turf and soil here behave differently from links or heathland courses — drainage is engineered rather than natural, and the landscape has a clean, almost architectural quality. Mature tree plantings now frame many holes convincingly, softening what was once open farmland.

The club has developed a strong competitive identity over the decades and regularly appears near the top of Dutch course rankings. It rewards accurate ball-striking over power, with water in play on a significant number of holes demanding genuine course management from the first tee.
