Few courses in Southern California can claim a setting quite like this one. Mt. Woodson sits in the boulder-strewn hills east of San Diego, where massive granite outcroppings — the same dramatic rock formations that define this stretch of the Ramona countryside — crowd the fairways and shape virtually every hole. The terrain is rugged and vertical by golf-course standards, and the layout makes no apologies for it. Elevation changes are severe, sightlines are theatrical, and the boulders aren't merely decorative; they are very much in play.
Ramona itself is a working ranching and wine-growing community in the San Diego backcountry, a world removed from the coastal resort corridors to the west. The climate runs hotter and drier than San Diego proper, and the native chaparral and oak scrub give the course a distinctly wild character that manicured resort tracks rarely achieve.
The par 70 reflects a design that leans on terrain rather than length to create its challenge. Scoring here depends on course management and creativity — brute force rarely survives the rocks.
