Few courses in Atlantic Canada have earned the kind of reputation Bell Bay has. Sitting on the shores of Bras d'Or Lake in Cape Breton, this is one of Canada's most celebrated public golf courses — consistently ranked among the best in the country and frequently appearing on national top-10 lists. The layout was designed by Thomas McBroom, one of Canada's foremost golf course architects, and opened in 1998. McBroom made full use of the dramatic Cape Breton terrain, routing holes through hardwood forests and along elevated ridgelines that deliver sweeping views of the lake and the surrounding highlands.
Baddeck itself is a small, unhurried town closely associated with Alexander Graham Bell, who made this part of Nova Scotia his adopted home. The area draws visitors for its scenery as much as its history, and Bell Bay fits naturally into that tradition — a course worth making a real trip to reach.
Playing Bell Bay feels like a genuine event. The elevation changes are significant, the views are distracting in the best way, and the overall quality of the design rewards thoughtful shot-making throughout the round rather than just on a handful of marquee holes.
