Dalton Ranch Golf Club occupies one of the more striking settings in Colorado golf — a valley floor along the Animas River just north of Durango, framed by sandstone canyon walls and the kind of high-desert scenery that makes it genuinely difficult to keep your eyes on the ball. The course was designed by Ken Dye and opened in 1993, and it makes full use of the natural corridor, routing holes along and across the river with the La Plata Mountains providing a constant backdrop. It's the sort of layout where the landscape does much of the design work, and Dye leaned into that rather than fighting it.
Durango sits at roughly 6,500 feet in the San Juan Mountains of southwest Colorado, which means the air is thin, the ball flies farther than you expect, and the summers are warm without being brutal — genuinely ideal golf weather from late spring through early fall.
As a daily-fee course, Dalton Ranch has long served as the go-to destination layout for the Four Corners region, drawing visitors who combine a round with the area's hiking, rafting, and narrow-gauge railroad tourism. It plays to a full par 72 and rewards shot-making over raw power.
