Tom Fazio designed Flint Hills National, which opened in 1999 on the eastern edge of the tallgrass prairie that gives this part of Kansas its name. The Flint Hills region is one of the last remaining stretches of native tallgrass prairie in North America, and Fazio worked with that landscape rather than against it — wide, sweeping contours, wind exposure that turns every club selection into a negotiation, and native grasses framing the rough edges of the routing. The course holds a well-earned reputation as one of the finest private clubs in the Midwest, consistently appearing on national rankings of the best courses in the country.
Andover sits just northeast of Wichita, which means Flint Hills National draws from a serious golf market with high expectations. The layout plays to a par of 71, and the combination of Fazio's strategic bunkering and the relentless Kansas wind ensures that number rarely feels generous.
Private and purposeful, this is a club where the land does most of the talking — prairie skies, native grasses bending in the wind, and a routing that feels earned rather than manufactured.
