Few courses in the Home Counties carry quite the atmosphere of Burnham Beeches, set within — and named for — one of England's most ancient and celebrated woodlands. The Beeches themselves, a National Nature Reserve just northwest of Slough, are famous for their extraordinary veteran trees, some pollarded for centuries, their vast twisted trunks giving the landscape an almost otherworldly character. Golf played here feels genuinely different from the manicured parkland norm; the woodland presses in with real presence, and errant shots vanish quickly into terrain that has been growing wild far longer than the game has existed in England.
The course is managed by Slough Borough Council, making it an accessible public facility serving a densely populated part of Berkshire and Buckinghamshire. That accessibility matters — this is a course where everyday golfers encounter a setting that many private members' clubs would envy.
At par 70, the layout rewards accuracy and course management over raw power. The woodland framing means that positioning off the tee tends to matter more than distance, and players who work the ball tend to find it more forgiving than those who simply overpower it.
