Tom Doak designed this course for Texas Tech University, opening in 2003 and named in honor of Tex Rawls, a longtime supporter of the Red Raiders golf program. Doak's minimalist, links-influenced philosophy found an unlikely but fitting canvas on the South Plains of West Texas — a landscape of wide skies, persistent wind, and little natural tree cover. The result is a course that rewards creativity and shot-shaping over brute force, with expansive fairways framed by fescue rough and subtle contours that can make a 5-iron decision feel as consequential as a driver.
Lubbock sits at roughly 3,200 feet elevation on the Llano Estacado, the massive flat tableland that defines this corner of Texas. The wind is rarely absent, and it turns the course into an entirely different test depending on the day's direction. It also serves as the home course for the Texas Tech men's and women's golf programs.
For visiting golfers, the Rawls Course represents genuine architecture tourism — a chance to play a thoughtful Doak design at public-access prices in a part of Texas that rarely draws golf travelers but probably should.
