Medicine Hat sits in the semi-arid shortgrass prairie of southeastern Alberta, where the South Saskatchewan River has carved a landscape of coulees, badlands, and river valley benchlands unlike anything else in the province. This city has one of Canada's sunniest climates and more natural gas beneath its streets than almost anywhere on the continent — a place with genuine character before you even pick up a club.
A par 66 tells you something important about Cottonwood Coulee: this is a course built around short-game precision and course management rather than raw distance. Layouts in this range typically feature a core of par 3s and short par 4s that reward placement, creativity, and the kind of controlled iron play that exposes weaknesses in a golfer's bag they might otherwise paper over with a driver.
The coulee terrain itself is the real draw. These dry ravines and valley cuts are defining features of southeastern Alberta's geography, and a course built among them would work with natural elevation changes and exposed prairie contours that make the landscape feel genuinely alive.
