Few golf experiences on earth are as raw and elemental as playing in Kópasker, a fishing village of only a few hundred souls perched on the Öxarfjörður bay in Iceland's remote northeast. Ásbyrgisvöllur takes its name — and its identity — from the broader Ásbyrgi region, the horseshoe-shaped canyon that Norse settlers believed was formed by Odin's eight-legged horse Sleipnir. That mythic, otherworldly quality carries right onto the course, where the natural terrain does the design work and the fairways read more as clearings carved from the subarctic landscape than anything architected in a conventional sense.
