Few golf clubs in western Canada carry the institutional weight of the Edmonton Country Club. Founded in 1896, it stands among the oldest golf and country clubs in Alberta, predating the province itself, and its history runs parallel to Edmonton's own emergence as a city. The club has occupied its current site in the river valley since the early 20th century, where the dramatic North Saskatchewan River valley terrain shapes both the landscape and the strategy of the course in ways no routing on flat prairie ground ever could.
The course itself winds through mature stands of elm and aspen, with significant elevation changes that demand real shot-making and local knowledge. The river valley setting gives the layout a character that feels more intimate and tactile than its urban location might suggest — fairways that drop away from elevated tees, approaches that reward players who truly understand how the land moves.
As a longstanding private club, Edmonton Country Club carries a strong members' culture, with traditions and a community that reflect more than a century of Alberta golf at its most serious.
