Oyster Reef Golf Club

Rees Jones redesigned Oyster Reef in the late 1980s, sharpening a layout that had already earned a reputation as one of Hilton Head Island's more demanding public-access tests. The course plays along the tidal marshes and waterways of Port Royal Sound, and that setting is the defining element — not just visually, but strategically. Wind off the water shifts constantly, turning manageable par 4s into exercises in club selection and patience, and the low Carolina sky over the marsh gives the whole round an expansive, almost cinematic quality.

Hilton Head itself has been a serious golf destination since Sea Pines opened in the early 1960s, and the island now supports more than 20 courses across a relatively compact geography. Oyster Reef sits in that competitive company as a layout that rewards players who respect its coastal exposure rather than those who simply muscle through it.
