Few clubs carry the weight of history that Southern Golf Club does in Australian golf. Founded in 1895, it ranks among the oldest golf clubs in Victoria and was shaped by the Sandbelt's remarkable transformation into one of the world's great golf landscapes. The course sits within Melbourne's famed Sandbelt corridor — that stretch of sandy, well-drained terrain south of the city that gave rise to Royal Melbourne, Kingston Heath, and a constellation of other world-class layouts. Southern shares that same underlying geology: firm, fast turf, subtle but punishing contours, and the kind of natural lie of the land that rewards thoughtful play over raw power.
The club has evolved considerably over its long life, and the course today reflects both its heritage and the demands of modern membership golf. Sandbelt golf at this level tends to ask questions rather than announce itself — greens that accept the running approach, rough that penalizes the wayward shot, and conditions that change meaningfully with the Melbourne wind.
For visiting golfers, Southern offers a genuine taste of what makes Melbourne's south-eastern suburbs one of the richest concentrations of golf anywhere on earth.
