Grants, New Mexico sits at roughly 6,500 feet elevation on the edge of one of the most dramatic volcanic landscapes in North America — El Malpais, the "badlands," a sprawling lava field that stretches south of town and gives this course its name. Coyote Del Malpais represents the accessible, community-rooted side of New Mexico golf — a public facility serving a working town along old Route 66, where the scenery does as much work as the architecture. For travelers cutting across the state on I-40, it's a legitimate reason to stop the car.
