Southwell sits in the heart of Nottinghamshire, a county whose golf culture runs deep — this is Robin Hood country, a gently rolling landscape of farmland, woodland, and the broad Trent valley. The town itself is a quiet cathedral market town, presided over by the Minster, and the surrounding countryside has a pastoral, unhurried character that tends to find its way into the courses rooted here.
The Orchards, as the name suggests, carries a flavour of the local agricultural landscape — the kind of course that grows out of its setting rather than being imposed on it. Nottinghamshire has a strong tradition of parkland golf, and a layout here would almost certainly work with mature trees, soft fairways, and the natural contours of the vale.
For visiting golfers, this part of the East Midlands offers an accessible and genuinely pleasant regional golf scene, without the crowds of better-known destinations. Southwell rewards the curious traveller willing to look beyond the marquee names.
