Whiskey Creek opened in 2000 in Frederick County's rolling farmland, about 40 miles northwest of Washington, D.C., and it arrived with serious ambitions. Designed by J. Michael Poellot and Ernie Els — yes, that Ernie Els — the course drew immediate attention as one of the more polished public-access layouts to emerge in the mid-Atlantic region around the turn of the millennium. The Els design influence shows in a routing that rewards thoughtful shotmaking over brute force, with generous fairways that tighten up as you approach well-bunkered, contoured greens.
The land itself does a lot of the work. Frederick County sits in a transition zone between the Piedmont and the Blue Ridge foothills, and Whiskey Creek moves through mature hardwoods and open meadows with enough elevation change to keep every round visually interesting. Autumn, when the surrounding canopy turns, is a particularly compelling time to play.
For golfers in the greater D.C.-Baltimore corridor looking for a step above the average daily-fee experience, Whiskey Creek has long held a reliable reputation — a course that plays fair but asks real questions, especially when the wind moves through those exposed hilltop holes.
