Few courses in England carry the weight of history that Southport & Ainsdale does. Founded in 1906 and shaped by the legendary James Braid, S&A — as it's known to regulars — sits on the storied Lancashire coast among the duneland that also gave the world Royal Birkdale and Hillside. It has hosted the Ryder Cup twice, in 1933 and 1937, and served for decades as an Open Championship final qualifying venue, a role that speaks to the genuine quality and rigor of the layout. The members here are quietly proud of that lineage, and rightly so.
The course moves through classic links terrain — rippling fairways, marram-covered dunes, and the kind of rough that punishes the wayward with biblical efficiency. Wind off the Irish Sea is the permanent fifth element, capable of turning a benign morning round into something altogether more humbling by afternoon.
Southport itself is an Edwardian seaside town with a strong golf identity, surrounded by a stretch of coastline that may be the finest concentration of links golf anywhere in the world. Playing S&A means stepping into a living piece of the game's history.
