Rees Jones designed Rio Secco in the late 1990s on a dramatic stretch of Mojave Desert terrain outside Henderson, and the result is one of the more serious tests in the greater Las Vegas area. The course occupies a series of canyons and elevated ridgelines that give it genuine topographic drama — blind tee shots, steep elevation changes, and carries over desert scrub that demand real decision-making rather than just power. It opened in 1997 and quickly earned a reputation as the thinking golfer's alternative to the flashier resort tracks closer to the Strip.
The Butch Harmon School of Golf has long been based here, which gives Rio Secco a particular identity: this is a place serious players come to work, not just to play. That association with one of the game's most respected instruction programs has kept the course on the radar of golfers who want more from a Las Vegas trip than novelty.
Henderson sits at the edge of the Las Vegas Valley, where the desert opens up and the Spring Mountains form a distant backdrop. That setting — wide sky, red-tinged rock, sparse vegetation — defines how Rio Secco looks and feels from the first tee to the last green.
