Taylorville sits in the heart of Christian County, a stretch of central Illinois where the land flattens into farmland in every direction and the sky feels enormous overhead. It's an agricultural community about 30 miles southeast of Springfield, the state capital, and the local golf scene reflects its character — unpretentious, community-rooted, and genuinely welcoming to anyone who shows up with a bag and a few hours to spare.
Lake Shore Golf Course carries that same sensibility. A public layout serving a small city, it exists as a gathering place as much as a golf course — the kind of spot where regulars know each other by name and the game is played without pretense. The presence of water, implied by the course's name, gives the layout some definition against the otherwise open prairie landscape, breaking up what could otherwise be a straightforward test.
Central Illinois golf is honest golf. No dramatic elevation changes, no manufactured drama — just fairways, greens, and the wind that sweeps across the plains with enough consistency to become a factor in nearly every round.
