Few public golf courses in the American Southwest carry as much history as Papago. Opened in 1963 and designed by William Francis Bell, the course sits at the foot of the iconic Papago Buttes — the red sandstone formations that define the eastern Phoenix skyline — and ranks among the finest municipal facilities in the country. It earned a full renovation in 2015 led by architect Jason Straka, which restored and modernized the layout while preserving its classic bones. Golf Digest and other major publications have consistently recognized it among the top public courses in Arizona.
The setting alone is hard to beat. Those burnt-orange buttes loom over several holes, creating a visual drama that most resort courses would charge three times the green fee to offer. The desert terrain is genuine rather than manufactured, and the course rewards players who manage angles and respect the natural contours of the land.
Papago is also home to the Arizona State University men's and women's golf programs, lending it a competitive edge and a well-maintained conditioning standard that elevates the everyday public experience considerably.
