Few public courses in the American Southwest carry the sense of place that Cochiti Golf Club does. Laid out on land belonging to the Pueblo de Cochiti, the course sits at roughly 5,300 feet elevation in the high desert of northern New Mexico, where the Rio Grande cuts through ancient volcanic terrain and the Jemez Mountains form the western skyline. Robert Trent Jones Jr. designed it in 1981, and the routing works with the natural contours of the land rather than against them — arroyos, desert scrub, and piñon-juniper woodland weave through the property in ways that feel genuinely indigenous to the landscape. It has earned consistent recognition as one of the best public courses in New Mexico, and the altitude adds distance to every club in the bag.
Playing here is not like playing a manicured resort layout. The desert rough is unforgiving, the wind off the mesa can shift the game entirely, and the views demand attention even when your score doesn't.
The Cochiti community has long maintained a welcoming but unhurried atmosphere around the course. It draws serious golfers from Santa Fe and Albuquerque — both within an hour's drive — who return not for spectacle but for a round that feels grounded in something real.
