Richmond sits in the Channel Country of far northwest Queensland, deep in the outback where the Flinders Highway connects a string of remote towns across a landscape defined by red earth, Mitchell grass plains, and the occasional flash flood from the rivers that drain toward Lake Eyre. It is the kind of place where distance is measured in hours rather than kilometres, and where a golf course represents something genuinely communal — not a leisure amenity but a social institution for a community that knows how to make the most of its isolation.
Like most outback Queensland clubs, Richmond almost certainly plays on preferred lies for much of the year, with locals developing an intimate knowledge of how the course shifts with the seasons — bone-hard in the dry, surprisingly lush after a good wet. The greens are likely oiled sand or dirt, a surface that rewards local knowledge and produces a style of putting that visiting golfers need a round or two to decode.
An 18-hole layout at par 72 is a genuine commitment for a town of Richmond's size, and that alone says something about how seriously the locals take their golf. Out here, the course is as much a reason to gather as it is a place to play.
