Dom Pedro Old Course

Few golf destinations in continental Europe have the history that Vilamoura can claim. The Old Course — the original layout on the Dom Pedro estate — opened in 1969, making it among the very first purpose-built championship courses in Portugal, and the anchor around which one of the country's most ambitious golf resorts eventually grew. Frank Pennink designed it, and his routing through the umbrella pines of the Algarve remains one of his most respected works: a measured, classical test that rewards accurate ball-striking rather than raw power.

The pines are the defining feature. They line virtually every hole in dense corridors, creating a sense of enclosure and a constant premium on driving lanes, while the sandy Algarve soil beneath them makes for superb drainage and firm, fast conditions through much of the year. The layout is not brutally long by modern standards, but position matters enormously here, and the course has a way of exposing impatient play.

Vilamoura itself is a purpose-built marina resort on the central Algarve coast, with reliable winter sun drawing northern European golfers throughout the off-season. The Old Course has hosted European Tour events and sits comfortably among Portugal's most historically significant layouts.
