Mammoth Lakes sits at roughly 8,000 feet in the eastern Sierra Nevada, and golf at this altitude plays with a noticeably different physics — the thin air carries the ball farther than flatlanders expect, and the surrounding landscape of volcanic peaks, lodgepole pines, and high-desert sage makes for one of California's most dramatic backdrops for the game.
Snowcreek is a resort course built for the visitors who come to Mammoth year-round, and its par-70 layout reflects the practical realities of mountain golf: a slightly shorter, tighter design suited to terrain that doesn't yield gracefully to a traditional parkland template. The season here is genuinely compressed by snowpack, typically running late spring through early fall, which gives every round a certain urgency and alpine freshness you don't find on the coast or in the valley.
The surrounding Mammoth Lakes resort community draws a mix of skiers-turned-golfers and outdoor enthusiasts testing a different set of skills. Expect mountain air, cooler temperatures even in summer, and scenery that will pull your attention well away from your scorecard.
