Stonewolf Golf Club sits just east of St. Louis in Fairview Heights, Illinois, one of the Metro East communities that collectively form the Missouri city's suburban sprawl across the Mississippi River. The course carries a reputation as one of the stronger public-access tracks on the Illinois side of the river, drawing players who want something with genuine teeth without crossing back into Missouri. The flat-to-gently-rolling terrain of southwestern Illinois is shaped here into a layout that demands more strategy than the surrounding geography might suggest.
Jack Nicklaus II designed Stonewolf, and the Nicklaus design DNA shows — generous landing areas that tighten as you approach the green, water in play on multiple holes, and a finishing stretch that has a way of undoing a round that felt comfortably in hand. The conditioning has long been a point of local pride, holding up well against courses in a metro market where golfers have plenty of options.
For St. Louis-area golfers willing to make the short drive across the river, Stonewolf consistently earns its place on the short list of must-play public courses in the region.
