Jake Gaither Municipal Golf Course carries a name that matters. Jake Gaither was the legendary head football coach at Florida A&M University, whose teams won 6 national championships and whose influence on Tallahassee — and on Black athletes across the South during the era of segregation — was profound. Naming a public golf course after him speaks to the civic pride this city takes in that legacy, and the course has long served as an accessible entry point into the game for Tallahassee's broader community.
Tallahassee sits in Florida's Panhandle, far removed from the resort corridors of Orlando or the coast. This is the real Florida — rolling terrain (rare for the state), tall pines, red clay soil, and a genuine four-season feel. Summers are hot and humid, but spring and fall rounds here can be genuinely pleasant.
As a municipal layout, Jake Gaither plays the democratic role that public golf does best: no membership required, no pretension, just 18 holes open to anyone who shows up. For locals and FAMU students especially, it represents golf as a community asset.
