Hampton sits in Henry County, about 35 miles south of Atlanta in the gently rolling Piedmont country between the city and the Georgia fall line. The area is best known to motorsports fans as the home of Atlanta Motor Speedway, but the surrounding community has grown steadily with suburban development pushing out from the metro, and golf is woven into that residential fabric. Crystal Lake's name suggests the kind of lake-oriented layout common to this part of Georgia, where developers and designers alike have long leaned on natural and man-made water features to define the character of a course.
A par-72 layout in this terrain typically works with modest elevation change, tree-lined corridors of Georgia pine and hardwood, and water hazards that demand decision-making off the tee and into greens. The Piedmont's red clay soil and warm-season grasses — Bermuda on fairways and greens — mean conditions reward players who keep the ball in play rather than those who gamble on power.
As a country club property, Crystal Lake carries the feel of a private or semi-private retreat oriented toward its membership community, offering a more personal rhythm than the resort or daily-fee courses that populate the broader Atlanta corridor.
