Purdue University's home course carries a reputation that extends well beyond the Big Ten. Designed by Pete Dye and opened in 1999, Kampen was built to championship specifications from the ground up, and Dye's fingerprints are unmistakable — railroad ties, severe bunkering, forced carries, and greens that reward precise approach angles rather than brute force. It consistently ranks among the finest university-owned courses in the country, and playing it feels less like a campus amenity and less like a resort novelty than a genuine test of golf that asks real questions.
The course occupies the Celery Bog natural area on Purdue's west side, a wetland-rich landscape that Dye wove into the design rather than engineered away. Water comes into play on nearly every hole, and the flat Indiana terrain is shaped into dramatic contours that wouldn't exist without deliberate earthmoving. Wind off the open stretches can quietly transform the difficulty.
West Lafayette sits in the heart of the Wabash River corridor, surrounded by agricultural flatlands that open up the sky in every direction. Purdue's golf program uses Kampen as its competitive home, which keeps the course maintained to a standard well above what most public-access players typically encounter.
